THE MICHAEL RUH STUDIO creates glassware for global luxury brands, architects, Interior agencies and individuals. The London based Studio was established in 2004 and is a partnership between Glass Blowers Michael Ruh and wife Natascha Wahl, supported by several assistants.
Their work is sought after globally. It is used in hotels, private residences, restaurants and within some of the worlds finest retail product ranges.
They speak the language of their vocation, glass, colour, form and meticulous craftsmanship. The creative emphasis is on a timeless, tactile aesthetic with minimal embellishment in rich harmonious colour palettes.
With a passionate dedication to the process to achieve perfection, hand blown production is limited to a handful of pieces per day. All are made from pure, optical-quality recycled glass.
Pieces blend colour with abstract line-work. These are Michael Ruh's signature lines – a process of incising into the near-finished shape when hot. The technique has similarities to Bokuseki calligraphy, in the sense that lines must be applied boldly and assertively – there can be no error as the glass records all.
Handmade:GLASS
Shot by BAFTA Award Winner film-maker Ian Denyer and commissioned by the BBC, this 30-minute film shot with no narrative using only the sound of the working glass workshop. The film shows making one glass piece from the Michael Ruh Collection – The Summer Pitcher, from the opening of firing up of the heating drum to the finished work.
