The Perfumer and the Glass Blower

Lyn Harris and Michael Ruh will be in conversation at London Craft week to discuss their artistic collaboration - where scent and glassmaking are combined for her new atelier, Perfume H, in London’s Marylebone. Lyn explores every angle of perfume creation, from how scents are discovered to building a complete and sensory experience including the development of specially commissioned bottles made by the Michael Ruh Studio.  Collaborating with Lyn, Michael developed a sumptuous dusky colour palette for hand-blown perfume bottles and candle holders for Perfume H’s personalised service. Michael will demonstrate the making of these extraordinary pieces and visitors can commission both a perfume and a bottle from each maker.  Book your ticket here

Each half-hour film shows the creation by hand of one object: a Windsor chair, a kitchen knife, a willow log-basket and a glass Jug , blown by Michael Ruh. Filmmaker Ian Denyer introduces each film with a conversation with one of the featured makers.  Book your ticket here

Michael Ruh invited to create an artistan retreat at Chelsea Flower Show

Six exceptional makers represented by The New Craftsmen, Gareth Neal, Gina Marris, Katherine May, Nic Webb, Silvia K and Michael Ruh have created individual artisan retreats tucked away in a semi-woodland glade at the RHS Chelsea flower Show.  The displays in each retreat provide an enlightening insight into the individual craft practices, and the intriguing ways in which they master diverse natural materials, from straw, wood, clay and glass. Michael's retreat features a collection of highly covetable hand blown Chelsea vases alongside his tools, furniture, drawings and colour studies.

BBC4 Film on Michael Ruh

As part of BBC Four Goes Slow series,  Michael Ruh is featured in a beautifully-filmed portrait of the making of the Summer Pitcher. Filmed in real time and without voiceover or music, the film's focus is entirely on the  highly skilled process. An absorbing, repetitive process of blowing and rolling as Michael delicately teases and manipulates the molten glass into shape. Glass is heated in a crucible until it becomes liquid. Michael's task, shared by his assistant, is to keep the glass they gather hot and in constant motion as he breathes into it and shapes the expanding globe into the jug shape.
